Africa's smallest mainland country: Atlantic beaches, river life and birdwatching.
The Gambia follows the River Gambia inland from the Atlantic, and its capital Banjul sits at the river mouth. Most hotels are along the beaches at Kololi, Kotu and Cape Point, a short drive from the airport.
The country is known for birdwatching, with hundreds of species found near the coast. Abuko Nature Reserve and the Kachikally crocodile pool are easy trips, and boat journeys upriver reach Kunta Kinteh Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site linked to the history of the slave trade.
The dry season, from November to May, is the best time to visit.
