Corfu is one of the greenest Greek islands, covered in olive and cypress trees, and its history shows influences from Venice, France and Britain. Corfu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has two fortresses, an arcaded street built by the French and a cricket ground from the British era.

On the west coast, Paleokastritsa has small bays and a hilltop monastery, while the north east coast around Kassiopi faces the mountains of Albania across a narrow strait.

The Achilleion Palace, built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, is a short drive south of town, and families favour resorts such as Sidari, Acharavi and Dassia.
