India's capital, where Mughal tombs and bazaars sit beside the wide avenues of New Delhi.
Delhi has been a capital for centuries, and you can see it in the city's monuments. Humayun's Tomb, the Red Fort and the Qutb Minar are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk is still one of the busiest markets in India.
New Delhi, laid out in the 1920s and 1930s, brings broad avenues, India Gate and leafy residential areas. Delhi is also the start of the Golden Triangle route to Agra and Jaipur.
Entry rules for India depend on your passport and the purpose of your trip, and they can change. Check the official sources below before you book and again shortly before you travel. If you need a visa, apply only through India's official visa portal, run by its Bureau of Immigration, and be wary of other sites that ask for extra payment.
See TravelHealthPro's India page and book a travel health appointment several weeks before you go. Protect yourself from mosquito bites, take care with food and water hygiene, and use sun protection, as average highs are near 40°C in May and June. Delhi's air quality is often poor from November to February, so check local air quality reports during your stay.
India's currency is the Indian rupee (INR). Carry some cash for markets, street food stalls and auto rickshaws, tell your bank before you travel, and check what your card charges for payments and withdrawals abroad.

It can be, especially from November to February, when colder weather and still air trap smoke near the ground and air quality is usually at its worst. If you have a heart or lung condition, mention your trip at a travel health appointment, and check local air quality reports while you are there.

The Delhi Metro is a practical way to cross the city, and its lines also reach neighbouring cities such as Gurugram, Noida and Faridabad. For shorter trips, taxis are easy to hail, and auto rickshaw fares are usually agreed with the driver before you set off.
Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) serves Delhi. The Delhi Metro's Airport Express line, also called the Orange Line, links the airport's Terminal 3 with New Delhi station.
It depends on your passport and the purpose of your trip, so check the official sources on this page before you book, and again shortly before you travel, as rules can change. If you need a visa, apply only through India's official visa portal, which its Bureau of Immigration runs.
