A seaside capital of design, saunas and an island fortress.
Helsinki is a compact capital on the Baltic, ringed by islands. Senate Square and the white Helsinki Cathedral mark the centre, and the Market Square on the harbour sells fish, berries and souvenirs.
A short ferry ride from the market takes you to Suomenlinna, an 18th century sea fortress spread across several islands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Back in town, the Temppeliaukio church is built into solid rock.
Sauna is a big part of Finnish life, and public saunas by the sea, such as Löyly, welcome visitors. Ferries also cross to Tallinn in Estonia in around two hours.
