MRU · 20.43° S · 57.67° E · Indian Ocean
Indian Ocean island of lagoons, mountains and resort hotels.
Mauritius is ringed by coral reefs, which keep its lagoons calm and clear. Resorts line the coast at Le Morne, Belle Mare and Grand Baie, and the island's mix of Indian, African, French and Chinese heritage shows in its food and festivals.
Inland, Black River Gorges National Park has hiking trails and waterfalls, and Chamarel is known for its coloured earth. Port Louis has a busy central market and the Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The cooler, drier months from May to December are the most popular.
