Riyadh is growing fast and opening up to visitors. The old heart of the Saudi state is Diriyah, where the mud brick At Turaif district is a UNESCO World Heritage site, now set among restaurants and walkways.

In the city, Masmak Fort and the National Museum tell the story of the kingdom, and the Sky Bridge on the Kingdom Centre gives views across the city. Riyadh Season, held over the winter, brings concerts, shows and events.

An hour or two outside the city the Edge of the World escarpment drops away over the desert. November to March is the best time to visit.
